Tips for Effective Website Messaging Part I: Know Your Keywords

Much of the time marketers focus so much on driving traffic to their websites through social media marketing that they forget about the copy on their websites. Website copy can be a deal breaker for many of your prospects: if you don't target them effectively with your copy, you will fail to convince them to take action. Even worse, poor website copywriting often equates to missing search engine traffic because your copy isn't search engine optimized (SEO). In this blog series, I'm going to talk about five ways for effective website copywriting.

#1 Tip for Effective Website Copywriting: Know Your Keywords

Great writing and great website copy are two completely different things, and one of the major differences is that good website copy is loaded with keywords (and a lot of them). If you were writing a one-page paper for a college literature course, you probably wouldn't repeat the same phrase or word 15 times in one page. That is exactly what you SHOULD do when writing copy for your website because of SEO. The more frequent use of your top keywords, the better.

I don't suggest even starting to write copy for your website without a list of SEO keywords. Before you hire a copywriter, hire an experienced SEO firm to develop a list of keywords. After you've developed your list of keywords, see who your competitors are in search engine results and find out how frequently your competitors are using keywords or key phrases in their website copy.

Finally, load keywords into your copy more frequently than your competitors are loading into their copy. If one of your key phrases is "fiber optic cables" and you find out that your top search engine competitor is using the word "fiber optic cables" ten times on its homepage, you might consider using this phrase twelve times in your website copy.
